This wave was captured during a lone wander in one of my favourite wave watching locations, the Dale of Walls. It is the largest of waves I have seen on the west side of Shetland, possibly my favourite day of wave watching to date.

Wave watching wakes up the senses; the refreshing smell of the sea from all the droplets in the air, the spray on your face as the waves break against the cliffs, the snippets of colour to be found at the very moment a wave curls and breaks, the salt on your lips and the roar of the immense, crashing sea.

The waves on this particular day were incredibly soothing. The horizon was barely visible, muted tones to be seen all round and the most wonderful spray flying from each wave. I think it is such a treat to see these fleeting colours a wave will show off, as the light breaks through the water.

This shot was captured during our first lockdown, on a much needed daily wander. With a view over to the island of Bressay’s lighthouse and high cliffs, I felt extremely lucky to have access to the coast at this time. On this particular day the sea was spectacular. I was mesmerised by the textures of the sea and decided to focus on this.

In February 2020, Shetland was battered with storm after storm. It was truly immense! I headed to the south end of Shetland to capture some waves at the Ness of Burgi. Here I spent hours with my camera capturing the rugged landscape and the epic, incoming waves until I could no longer brave the elements.

A truly WOW moment watching the 27’s orca pod passing the Dore Holm, on a stormy November day. They had taken this route just days before and we knew that they would likely pass this already epic scene. The judgement to wait for them, with the the Dore Holm in the background, paid off and we were incredibly lucky to have this beautiful sight before us.
